I thought some of the points that were made in The Dumbest Generation were both unfair and unrealistic. One of the points that was made that I discussed with my group was that in 2006, 2/3 of high school seniors couldn't explain a sign in a theater reading "colored entrance." This was just so shocking to me that people did not have enough knowledge to know what the sign meant. Did people not study this kind of stuff in school????? This was one of the points that I found sort of unrealistic.
In my group, we basically talked about the way we are blamed for being "the dumbest generation." Is it because we weren't taught the correct things in middle school and high school? We weren't taught the things we are "supposed" to know right now? How can it be our fault that we are so into technology when it is ALL around us at this day in age?
Overall, my reaction to the reading was that we are not given the chance. Things are always changing, and as time goes on, there is more and more to know and learn. Should we jam our brains full of our past and not with our future?

Just because this one group of students did not know what the colored signed ment or the history behind it, doesn't mean that they can fault our entire generation for this.
ReplyDeleteI agree, they can't solely blame our generation for not knowing anything, there are other people at fault also. Like our parents, teachers, the state and governments who decide what and how we learn have to share part of the blame.
